One of the reasons for failures of business institutions around the world has been the fact that business theories and knowledge has remained stagnant and senior managers manning the organization have old lenses to look at new problems. Doing business in 21st century is turning out to be very different from doing business in 20th century. Leadership in business in the latter half of 20th century was driven by hierarchies, scale, techniques, creating and leveraging brands. The first decade of 21st century, especially financial crisis, has clearly shown that while these may be important, the new business leadership would not be driven from scale, techniques and hiearachies. Leadership of future would be driven by ability of leaders to attain balance, harmony and connectedness not only at level of business and finance but also at socio-ecological and cosmic level. Leaders of tomorrow would be people with different lenses to view the changing world. The program addresses interconnectedness among the three most important drivers of business success in the future world: Strategy, Leadership and Innovation.

XLRI was founded in 1949 by Fr. Quinn Enright, S.J. in the Steel City of Jamshedpur. Fr. Enright visualized XLRI to be a partner in the liberation and development journey of the independent India with a vision of "renewing the face of the earth". Fr. Bill Tome joined hands with him to bring that vision to fruition. Both, together with the other Jesuit companions, worked tirelessly towards translating the Vision "Renewing the face of the earth" into action.Over many years XLRI has developed its own identity. The hallmark of this identity is, not to walk on the beaten path but to strike new routes; not to benchmark but to be benchmarked, to be second to none but to be the first to respond to the needs of the people and the nation, by taking up the tasks which are bold but necessary which nobody has hitherto taken up.This enterprising and pioneering spirit can be witnessed throughout the history of XLRI.
